Doing DC: 4th of July Edition
With 5 hours to kill before the 4th of July firework display, Peter and I laid on our makeshift picnic blanket under the shaded tree and remembered how special the past 4 years have been:
2017: With the national anthem blasting through the loud speakers and the distant whirl of rollercoasters zooming by, we stood on the sidewalk watching the infamous display of Disneyland fireworks
2018: Sprawled out on the field of a minor league baseball team, we joined the 4th festivities in Greenville, SC
2019: With the waves slowly rocking the boat, we posted up on the Doebler boat and gazed at the fireworks display from above
2020: My bum on the picnic blanket leaning against Pete, we watched in awe at the hundreds of boaters day-drinking on the Potomac before the military fly-overs and incredible fireworks
For whatever reason, well the fact that we had nothing better to do, we decided to make a day of our 4th of July. With rumors of it being the best fireworks display in years, we wanted to claim the best seat in the house, which just so happened to be under a shady tree along the Potomac River. We munched on chips & salsa, DOTS and Diet Coke for the next 5 hours, watching boats partying and people swimming.
At 6 PM booms from military planes shook the earth as we watched the military flyover. Peter was hooked. Each passing plane looked different than the one before it, and came from a different point in history.
At 9:07 on the dot, fireworks lit up the Memorial Bridge while another batch illuminated the National Mall, which quickly turned into a massive display surrounding the National Monument. It was the most spectacular and magical display I have ever seen.
This is definitely another great 4th in the books.
Cheers!
